Support is a sequence, not a phone number

Support is not one thing. Done well, it is a sequence, and most services only have part of it.
Good support notices early. It does not wait for someone to fall apart before it engages. It reads the quiet signs - the person going quiet, the shift in someone who used to be steady - and treats those as reasons to check in, not wait and see.
Good support is easy to reach. If asking for help means a formal process, a referral, a note on a file, many people will choose to carry on instead. The easier and more confidential the first step, the more people take it.
Good support is trusted. People need to believe the help is real, that the person offering it understands the job, and that reaching out will not be used against them later.
And good support does not stop at signposting. Handing someone a phone number is a start, not an answer. Good support walks with them until they are actually connected to something that helps.
Most services have pieces of this. Few have all of it, joined up. That gap is where people fall.
